Biografie

Amélie Verfaillie (°Gent, 1988) studeerde in 2010 af aan de UGent als master in de geschiedenis. Voor haar masterproef “London Calling”: Amnesty International en haar vroege lobbywerk in Israël en de Bezette Palestijnse Gebieden (1968-1971). Een onderzoek naar Amnesty’s poging tot onpartijdigheid” kreeg ze in 2011 de eerste Prijs André De Smet, uitgereikt door het Amsab-ISG en Vrede vzw voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar de vredesproblematiek.

In 2014 studeerde ze, opnieuw aan de UGent, af als master in de rechten met de masterscriptie “Aan elkaar vastgeketend? Amnesty International en de Verenigde Naties. Een onderzoek naar Amnesty’s lobbyinspanningen in de strijd tegen foltering en de doodstraf (1961-1984)”.
In 2019 behaalde ze haar doctoraat in de rechten, getiteld “Breaker of chains, diplomat of change? Amnesty International’s advocacy for human rights at the United Nations (1961-mid-80s)”. Daarna was ze enkele maanden actief als onderzoeker aan het Vlaams Vredesinstituut. Als volgende uitdaging start ze aan de balie in Gent, met een focus op strafrecht.

Biography

Amélie Verfaillie (°Ghent, 1988) graduated in 2010 with a master’s degree in history at Ghent University. For her master’s thesis in history ““London Calling”: Amnesty International’s first lobbying work in Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territories (1968-1971). Exploring Amnesty’s pursuit of impartiality” she was awarded the first André De Smet Prize (2011) by Vrede vzw and AMSAB, the Flemish Archive and Research Centre for Social History, to support young researchers studying peace issues.

In 2014 she obtained a master’s degree in law, with the master’s thesis “Chained together? Amnesty International and the United Nations. Amnesty’s lobbying activities against torture and the death penalty (1961-1984)”.
In 2019 she obtained her doctoral degree in law with a PhD titled “Breaker of chains, diplomat of change? Amnesty International’s advocacy for human rights at the United Nations (1961-mid-80s)”. Next, she worked a few months as a scientific researcher at the Flemish Peace Institute, before starting at the Bar in Ghent, with a focus on criminal law.
